My driving test (passed first time, four minor faults, get in) was happily uneventful. Which was just as well, given that I interfaced the front of a 1.6-litre Ford Focus with a hapless adult pheasant at an estimated 60mph, 10 minutes into my first driving lesson. The driving instructor remarked that it was “always good to get those sorts of things out the way early” as he instructed how to deploy windscreen washer jets
