BIRDS OF FRIENDSHIP
You will need
■ Pot holder outer fabric (linen/cotton blend) – One (1) Fat Quarter
■ Cotton batting – One (1) Fat Quarter size piece
■ Insul-bright thermal batting – 10in square
■ Binding fabric – One (1) Fat Quarter
■ Assorted scraps in browns/oranges/yellows/creams and prints for appliqué
■ Appliqué and corner templates (see Templates section)
■ Karen Kay Buckley Perfect Circles – small set (optional)
■ Chalk/removable pencil
■ Sandpaper board (optional)
■ Template plastic or card
■ 1in wide bias tape maker (optional)
Finished size
■ 8½in square
Notes
■ Seam allowances are ¼in unless otherwise stated.
■ Appliqué templates do not include seam allowance.
■ Press all fabrics before cutting.
■ When placing the appliqué pieces, all placement measurements are to the marked seam line on each piece, not the outer seam allowance edge.
■ WS = wrong side.
■ RS = right side.
Fabrics used
■ Essex Yarn Dyed Linen (Ochre) by Robert Kaufman Fabrics plus scraps from Kerry’s stash.
1 From the pot holder outer fabric, cut two (2) 10in squares.
2 From the cotton batting, cut two (2) 10in squares.
3 From the Insul-bright thermal batting, cut one (1) 10in square.
4 From the binding fabric, and cutting on the bias, cut two (2) 1⅞in x 20in strips for the binding and one (1) 1⅞in x 6½in strip for the hanging loop.
Making the quilted backing
5 To make the quilted reverse side of the pot holder, start with a cotton batting square, place the Insul-bright square on top with the metallic side facing downwards. Next, add the second cotton batting square, then finish the quilt sandwich with one (1) of the pot holder fabric outer squares.
6 Mark a 1in grid of quilting lines on the top layer using a ruler and Hera marker, secure the edges with safety pins or thread baste. Quilt using a walking foot. Trim quilted backing to 8½in square.
Preparing the appliqué shapes
7 Trace templates onto template plastic or card. For the bird, wing, petal, leaf and heart appliqué pieces, place the chosen fabric on a sandpaper).
