Still ticking along
Back in the days when Jomo Cosmos was a regular in the Premier League, winning trophies, reaching finals and walking with the pride that was befitting of their nickname Ezenkosi, they had a lethal front-man, one of the greatest ever to come out of the Southern African region.
Manuel ‘Tico-Tico’ Bucuane arrived from neighbouring Mozambique in the months leading to the start of the modern day PSL after being spotted by Jomo Sono at the 1996 AFCON finals.
Tico-Tico was lethal at his best, reaching double figures in the first three years of the PSL and becoming the first non-South African to reach triple figures in the colours of a local top-flight club, going on to net 106 goals in the country’s top-flight.
His stay at Ezenkosi was disrupted by a short loan spell at Chinese club Guangdong Hongyuan and another brief stint at Tampa Bay Mutiny in the USA.
“I think I overstayed my welcome at Cosmos and those are the things that I regret,” reveals Tico-Tico.
