Proms heroes
was surprised that, in (August), Michael White made no mention of the man who launched the event in 1895: Robert Newman, impresario and manager of Queen’s Hall who entrusted the 26-year-old Henry Wood with bringing his vision to fruition. My first memory of the Proms was when, as a 17 year-old, I attended the second night of the 1944 season.
