FIELD MARSHAL HELMUTH VON MOLTKE THE ELDER

TACTICAL INNOVATOR AND ARCHITECT OF PRUSSIAN VICTORY 1800-1891 PRUSSIA

Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke the Elder brought innovative tactical and strategic thinking, organisational skill and esprit de corps to the Prussian military. He exercised command and control through an adaptation of concepts that were subsequently proven on the battlefield.

An advocate of theories put forward a generation earlier by Prussian General Carl von Clausewitz, Moltke was among the first to recognise the advantages of rail transport in facilitating the movement of large armies and their necessary supplies. He further realised that direct tactical control of multiple substantial formations was virtually impossible.
