Being a writer is financially a curse. If you’re a writer, it’s what you are rather than what you do. I’ve never written a novel, because there are probably 50,000 people in the UK alone who have the talent and application to write good novels, so it would just be silly to compete. For every super-lucky (and also talented and determined) JK Rowling, there are 49,999 equally talented and determined writers who will retire unpublished.
