GOLD DOUBLE EAGLE COINS

Issued between 1849 and 1933, the American gold double eagle coin held a face value of $20. Prior to this the highest denomination coin was the $10 gold eagle. The $20 double eagle is often confused with the much later modern 1oz eagle having been issued from 1986 which holds a $50 face value.
Specifications of the gold Double Eagle coin
Each double eagle contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold. Their purity is 90% gold or 0.9 as opposed to the 22ct (0.916 purity) or 24ct gold often seen in modern bullion coins. The addition of 10% or 0.1 copper, raises the overall weight of the double eagle to 33.436g, just over a troy ounce (31.1035g).
