BLESSED with a climate warm enough to grow a diverse range of subtropical plants that would struggle elsewhere on the British Isles, the Channel Islands are home to many magnificent gardens. Guernsey, in particular, has a historical association with plants and not only ornamental ones: commercial horticulture has been a mainstay of the local economy for more than a century. In the 1950s, more, and cut flowers, such as freesias, agapanthus and alstroemerias, exported across the world.
