FUN CUP FIZZLES AS HERBERT ALSO SHINES IN MX-5s

The Team AxiaMetrics trio of Chris Dovell, Kristian Rose and Riley Phillips became the fourth winner in four races in this year’s Fun Cup.

After dominating the second half of the four-hour race, Phillips took the flag over a minute clear of a terrific duel for second place.

The Make Happen Racing pairings of Chris Hart/Henry Dawes and Steve Walton/Greg Evans had been in contention, but, in the final stint Dawes and Evans were continually swapping, until Dawes got the verdict on the last lap.

Luke Herbert proved unbeatable in both Mazda MX-5 Supercup races. In the first,Abbie Eaton chased him all the way to the flag, while an entertaining duel for third was clinched by Samuel Smith a lap from home, pulling out a 0.5s gap on Patrick Fletcher.

It was any one from four in the second, between Herbert, Smith, Eaton and Colin Bysouth. The lead changed continuously, but when the race was red flagged after a shunt at Brooklands, Herbert was confirmed the victor, with 0.427s covering all four.

There was another double winner in the Fiesta Juniors, with Joseph Loake reigning supreme.

In the first race William Orton retained second throughout, while newcomer Jake Weston came under second-half pressure as the duelling Joseph Knight and Jake Triggs closed in. But his rivals’battle only helped him take his first podium.

In race two Loake was clear from the off, while Orton and Weston headed down the Wellington Straight side by side, before Weston took the outside line at Brooklands and clinched second place on the road.

Dylan Hotchin began to challenge for second, but an ambitious challenge at Becketts on Weston left him sidelined with broken steering, but also cost Weston as Orton snatched second place back.
