North Yorkshire County Record Office holds a remarkable gem from the town of Bedale – a pair of notebooks containing annals kept by local shoemaker Robert Hird. They provide a detailed narrative of life in the town – all handwritten in rhyme. We spoke to record assistant Gail Falkingham to find out more about the story behind the books.
