THE A5 SPANS 252 miles (406km), linking London and the port of Holyhead in Anglesey, north-west Wales. Its history dates back to 1800, and the need to improve links between London and Dublin.

Renowned civil engineer Thomas Telford was appointed to oversee the development of the route between England and Wales, combining existing and new roads. The opening of the Menai Suspension Bridge in 1826 heralded its completion.

The route begins at Marble Arch, central London, and runs north-west on the Edgware Road through Kilburn
