■ Use a scant ¼in seam allowance unless stated otherwise.
■ Fi recommends using a fused, raw-edge technique for your appliqué (see appliqué notes box).
■ Cut pieces in the order listed and cut strips from the longest edge (approximately 21in) of the fat quarter unless otherwise instructed. Try not to be too worried about fabric symmetry – the Arts & Crafts style was all about the charm of hand-made items, so quirks are good!
■ Blocks used in the middle column are referred to as ‘centre blocks’, and blocks used in the left and right columns are ‘side blocks’.
■ OS = Odd Scraps block.
■ CC = Cross & Crown block.
■ DD = Duck & Ducklings block.
■ WOF = width of fabric.
■ HST = half-square triangles.
■ QST = quarter-square triangles.
Cutting out
1 From the cream background fabric, cut the following:
■ One (1) 75in length – with fabric folded, measure 75in along selvedges; fold back the remainder keeping the fold perpendicular, then cut along the fold. Set aside the rest of the fabric for step 2. Open out so selvedges are at both edges, then refold the length twice to make four (4) layers. The folded fabric should be around 44in wide (WOF) by 19in deep. Trim off the first selvedge to give a straight edge. From this edge, cut:
– Two (2) 10½in x 75in strips (for sashing).
– Four (4) 2½in x 75in strips (for borders).
– One (1) 8½in x
