Some travellers pare things down to the basics, while others fly by the ‘more-is-more’ theory, loading up their vehicles with an excess of toys and innovative time-savers to make the road trip easier.
But does it? We all travel differently, but what really separates travellers in every campground is how much gear they take on board. Here’s my pick of things to leave behind when you next hit the road.
HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES
They eat into your power supply, take up precious space on board and add weight to your rig, and though they might be incredibly convenient, household appliances really do belong at home. Think coffee machines, bread makers, food processers, rice cookers, electric knives, power tools and cleaning machines — all those gadgets we get for Christmas that fill our cupboards and clutter our benchtops.
No matter how sophisticated your caravan set-up is, very few electrical appliances rate as essential gear for travelling. While it might be difficult to break your relationship with your favourite time-saving devices, travelling is supposed to be about living a simpler life, uncluttered by an excess of white goods.
