With plenty of space and a bilge-keeled option, it is easy to see why this family cruiser was so popular, says Duncan Kent

In the days when Luhrs Marine was building new boats in its UK yard in Portland, Dorset, the Legend 36 boasted more internal volume than many 40-footers, plus a bilge-keeled option to boot.

Originally marketed as the Legend 356, she was renamed when the new version was launched in 2004 and soon became one of the Luhrs factory’s most popular family cruising yachts. All the best features of the 356 were retained, but the 36 received a more comprehensive standard inventory, along with numerous other refinements.

Legends are not to everyone’s liking with their wide, arched cockpits and unusual Bergström & Ridder (B&R) backstay-less rigs, but their spacious interior, generous inventory and innovative design makes them enduringly popular.
