I am not sure whether there is such a thing as a typical Field reader, but I suspect that the great majority of Fielders own a dog, which is likely to be a spaniel, a retriever or a terrier. What’s more, I’ve no doubt that most readers reckon that their dog is a pretty good family companion. However, whether the dog has what it takes to win The Best Family Gundog award in The Field’s annual gundog competition, sponsored by Chudleys, is another matter.
In 2020, this was a hotly contested class in the competition, with each entrant a strong contender for the prize. Who could resist the charm of Ziggy, a black cocker belonging to Peter Goodchild, who is not only an excellent game flusher and agility dog but a regular visitor to old people’s homes, where he cheers up people with dementia?
