The tyres were wearing badly as he continued to circulate on the intermediates when others had pitted – a slip here, another there, but always onwards, the wet-weather tread getting ever shallower, until soon enough the contact patches were bald. His intermediates were slicks – if it rained again, he was in trouble. Another slip, bigger this time, and disaster. Championship-clinching expectations extinguished.
