I VISIT a lot of National Trust gardens, the sort that are run on a shoestring by dedicated, but underpaid and underappreciated horticulturists struggling to remain on speaking terms with a property manager who doesn’t know a daisy from a dandelion. Alas, there isn’t a lot we can learn from their gardens, because they have to operate on a much larger scale than most of us can aspire to. Their keepers are forced to rely on(also known as ‘lambs’ lugs’), all good doers of the ‘unloved, but useful’ sort.
