THEY GOT GAME

He’s the Hollywood veteran who breathed fresh air into the superhero genre with Deadpool (and followed it up with voicing a Pokémon — talk about range). She’s the acclaimed star of TV sensation Killing Eve, thrilling viewers as cinematic psychopath Villanelle. As for the movie that’s bringing them together, it’s one that looks like it’ll give both of them the chance to cut loose: set inside the world of a Grand Theft Auto-style shoot’n’loot video game, peppery action comedy Free Guy promises to unleash all manner of cyber-carnage.

AS PAIRINGS GO, RYAN REYNOLDS AND JODIE COMER ARE A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

The Shawn Levy-directed film sees Guy (Reynolds), a non-playable character cheerfully working in an in-game bank, have his life interrupted by a gun-toting player named Molotov Girl (Comer). Swept off his pixelated feet, Guy is dragged into Molotov’s quest to recover some incriminating evidence in Free City, their budding friendship threatened by the reality of their situation — she’s from the real world, he’s a bunch of 0s and 1s.

If was timely back at the start of the year, it’s even more so now, in a COVID-19 world where we’re all spending countless hours inside digital worlds. So it seemed apt that sit-down with Reynolds and Comer happened inside the online walls of Zoom. Fortunately, no shoot-outs or car chases broke out during our 40 minutes with the stars, although it wasn’t entirely tech-drama-free.
