Between September 1940 and May 1941, Britain endured eight months of near constant aerial bombings – a period known as the ‘Blitz’, from the German word blitzkrieg (lightning war). London alone saw 57 consecutive nights (and many days) of raids, which killed more than 15,000 people and made thousands more homeless. It quickly became apparent that this sustained bombing was going to be something the British people had to get used to.

The bombings of the London Blitz weren’t the first on
