Buckets of Bokashi
The bokashi system of composting is ideal for small gardens or even apartments and it can be done indoors because kitchen scraps are processed in small amounts in a sealed container. Most home systems use two containers (usually buckets) and when one is full it is set aside to ferment and the second is then filled.
Bokashi is, essentially, a fermentation system. It has more in common with sauerkraut than your compost pile. It is a way of preparing your kitchen scraps so that they break down faster and more completely in your regular composting system. This system utilises the services of different microbes than are found in your well-turned compost heap or bin and focuses more on lactic acid and anaerobic bacteria in a proprietary brew of microbes called EM1. The EM stands for ‘effective microorganisms’.
