Series 2 XJ6 fuel overflow
Q Since changing the fuel pumps on my 1978 XJ6 two-door coupe, it has developed a potentially dangerous problem. The car runs properly when either fuel tank is selected, proving the pumps to be functioning correctly, but when the tanks are fully filled, fuel overflows from the opposite tank to the one selected, obviously creating something of a fire hazard. Do you think the new pumps are in some way faulty, or, if not, what have I missed?

A You do not specifically mention it, but we assume that, being a 1978 model, your car is fitted with the later in-tank submerged fuel pumps – as opposed to the earlier conventional SU units that were mounted
