GREEK SHIPOWNER

The Pontikos family from Oinousses, near Chios in the north Aegean Sea, had a long tradition of shipowning in the age of sailing ships, with Petros Pontikos (1837-1934) being the first Oinoussian to own a steam ship, the 1873 Wallsend-built Petros, between 1908 and 1910.

His grandson, Elias N. Pontikos (1907-87), began a career at sea as a cabin boy at the age of eight during World War I. He subsequently borrowed some gold
