TIGHTROPE ACT

It’s March 2010, two years into Barack Obama’s first term as US President. An aide enters the Oval Office.

“A new Harris poll is out, Mr President. There’s good news and bad news: 38% of Republicans think you’re doing many of the things Hitler did.”

Obama sighs. “So, what’s the good news?”

“Sir, that is the good news,” says the aide. “The bad news is that 22% of Republicans think you’re the anti-Christ.”

The scene is imaginary but the poll findings aren’t. They confirmed the existence of what came to be known as “Obama Derangement Syndrome”.
