Trapping is not always sunshine and rainbows. The weather is sometimes a trapper’s worst enemy and changing conditions are some of the toughest things that trappers have to work through to be successful.
Water trappers have adapted to ice, snow, floods and other weather-related changes. For many of those hardy souls, it has become second nature to make an under-the-ice baited set for beavers or to set a muskrat run. They have figured out when and how to move their traps with rising and falling water levels. It’s the land trappers, especially the canine and feline trappers, that run into problems with the weather.
What fun would it be if the weather was perfect all season long? Truthfully, that would be pretty nice. But as trappers, depending on where we trap, we have to contend with the changes that Mother Nature throws at us.
