George Shaw served with distinction for 28 years in the US Air Force, a decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam war eras whose example inspired his daughter Linda to enlist in the Air Force and serve 22 years herself. As a military retiree, he served his fellow veterans at the Louis A Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg, West Virginia, putting in eight years as a mail room supervisor. It was a place he knew well, a place where he felt safe and found community, according to Linda, 58, and her mother, Norma, 80, George’s wife of 59 years. “We knew everybody there, knew the doctors, the nurses,” says Norma, “and he always got the very best of care.”
So when George, 81, began experiencing weakness and trouble breathing in March 2018, Norma took him to the ER at the VA hospital. George, who suffered from heart disease and mild dementia, was admitted on Thursday, March 22. Norma was told he would go home the following Monday. But the night before his discharge from the hospital’s ward 3A, his blood sugar mysteriously plummeted. No-one could explain why – George wasn’t diabetic. “It’s like he was trapped in his body,” says Norma. “He couldn’t talk, couldn’t get up.”
