Melanie and Ray Steele always dreamed of retiring near the water—particularly the Alabama coast. But when Ray retired a few years before Melanie, they shifted their plans, moving closer to Melanie’s job in northern Alabama. The couple soon agreed that Smith Lake was the perfect compromise. With nearly 500 miles of shoreline around the lake, there was a lot of ground to cover on their journey to find the perfect site for their waterfront oasis.
