t seems that whenever the Hawaiian Islands are hit with a natural disaster, be it hurricane or heavy rain, Kaua‘i seems to get hit the hardest. After the arrival of COVID-19, it appeared that the same might be true for the fishing industry on the beautiful Garden Isle. With the decline in travel to Kaua‘i, the few charter boats that operate have mostly stopped running. For an entire year now, many of the fishermen have had to adapt to stay afloat (literally!). Capt. Harry Rivera’s inspiring fishing career on Kaua‘i over the past 25 years can remind us of two very important things: the people of Kaua‘i always find a way to rebuild; and a person’s love for fishing never fades away.
