On average, patients spend fifteen to thirty minutes with their doctor, whether they suffer from a sprained ankle or a life-threatening disease.

No matter the severity of the situation, doctors only have enough time to ask a handful of questions and skim through the records. They then rely on memories of medical school to recommend treatment options, and the patient sets off to see if it will work this time. Most patients can’t comprehend this. “That’s it?” they ask. “There must be other options. Does the doctor even know why I’m suffering?”
