JODIE FOSTER my life in pictures

TAXI DRIVER 1976

Foster’s role as a child prostitute was just one controversial element of Scorsese’s still-electrifying all-timer.

“I did Alice Doesn’t with [] Scorsese before I did . That was a huge moment in my life. was a huge moment in my life. At 12 years old, I’d already made maybe nine movies. I’d done a lot of TV and worked a long time. But I didn’t really understand the challenge of acting. I thought it was a dumb job. Even then I was interested in being a director. But I didn’t think acting was that interesting. It wasn’t until I realised, through working with [] De Niro and Scorsese that I just understand it. It was about so much more. There was a depth of commitment that I hadn’t really gotten to yet. I never really built a character. I’d just been asked to act natural and learn lines, and that was it. It was the beginning of me understanding that. I’m sure I would’ve understood it some other way! I don’t think it was peculiar to that film.”
