Easter really should be about the Resurrection, but for many people it’s about chocolate. It is, therefore, an irony that the group we have to thank for the chocolate industry in this country doesn’t traditionally celebrate Easter. For it was the Quakers who launched the biggest names in British chocolate: Cadbury, Fry’s and Rowntree’s. The men behind these brands weren’t just the Willy Wonkas of the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries; they were visionaries and entrepreneurs, who developed and promoted our favourite sweet treat while forging a new working environment for their staff that was ahead of its time in terms of pay, hygiene, transparency and staff benefits.
It wasn’t just with chocolate that the Quakers displayed such acuity; the number of famous businesses founded by Quakers between the 17th and 19th centuries is startling: from Barclays and Lloyds banks, to Carr’s and Huntley & Palmers biscuits, via Clarks shoes
