No car is perfect and that includes the Avanti, whose greatest flaw was that good fortune never really smiled upon it.
Introduced in 1962 as “America’s Most Advanced Automobile,” it was an effort both commendable and daring to inject excitement into Studebaker. An early ad explained that “you are looking at a new take-off point for the American automobile. It is the Avanti by Studebaker. It is a prestige car, a fast car, a safe car and certainly the most advanced car produced in America today.”
With a 289-cid V-8 good for 240 hp in its most basic form — the numbers rose with superchargers — the Avanti
