The greasy Buckinghamshire soil clings to my boots like a despot in some far-flung country who simply won’t give up. It’s hard and heavy, making it immensely challenging to find a firm foothold, and after just an hour we are all puffing like men three times our age with a fondness for unfiltered cigarettes.
Chinese water deer like to position themselves in open fields, fully exposed, so the only way to get close enough for a shot is by crawling over the earth.
