THE STORY SO FAR: Jill has been thinking back to her teen romance with a French boy, Hubert. He came to England as an ‘Onion Johnnie’, selling onions from his uncle’s farm near Roscoff, and almost broke Jill’s heart when he confessed he had a girlfriend back home. Jill’s amused at the coincidence when her husband, Geoff, suggests a holiday in Northern France, taking the ferry home from Roscoff, but he’s unexpectedly confined to bed on their last day, having pulled a muscle playing golf. Left on her own, Jill establishes that Hubert now runs the onion farm. On a whim, she hires a bike and cycles off there. She sees Hubert – as handsome as ever – in conversation with a woman who is obviously his wife, and thinks that will be that. But then she discovers a flat tyre on her bike. And Hubert offers to help…
Hubert was looking at her intently and Jill blushed under his gaze. How embarrassing. She was a happily married woman, for goodness’ sake! But he still had exactly the same effect on her that he’d had when she’d been a schoolgirl.
‘I don’t want to put you to any trouble,’ she said hurriedly.
‘It’s no trouble at all. I insist!’
