Matt Robertson Enveleau
Subtempo
Enveleau is the emotionally affecting third album from Canadian-based composer, producer and musical director, Matt Robertson. Like 2016’s and from 2018, merges ambient, classical and electronic sensibilities with an organic and harmonious feel. Ambient textures, spacing and tempo combine with softer-edged bass and rhythms and the elegance of classical compositions. Full of warmth, emotion and beauty, the record has a distinctly human touch, giving the album a personal feeling. It is introspective at times, but then expansive and cinematic at others. The transitions are organic and flowing, feeling like a nomadic journey across a loved landscape that has not been visited in a long time. The slowed down pace and freedom of space across the album gives it its real character. The beauty, warmth and depth of feeling is allowed to wash over and fully engulf the listener, immersing us in Robertson’s impressively crafted world. A gearshift towards a more rhythm-driven aesthetic takes over in the second half of the album, as Robertson explores more intricate drum patterns and spacier, synth-led excursions that stretch the record out further beyond its expected confines. A brilliantly measured and controlled record full of beauty and warmth, provides nutrients for the soul.
