The 1920s country retreat of Sir Rupert and Lady Dorothy D’Oyly Carte (of the opera fame) has 30 acres of luxuriant coastal gardens, featuring tender plants that flourish in the mild climate. Around the house are tranquil terraces with ponds and herbaceous planting that reflects the tastes of their former owners – pastels for Dorothy, hot colours for Rupert.
