BUYER’S GUIDE FIESTA SUPERSPORT

Having already dipped a tentative toe in the water with the 1300S, Ford hedged its bets on the popularity of a fast Fiesta with the July 1980 launch of the Supersport.

Truth be told, ‘fast’ was probably a bit optimistic as the most dynamic Fiesta to date produced no more than 66 bhp from its twin-choke Weber-fed 1297cc Kent engine. But, while the Supersport was no dragster, it certainly looked the part and there was no denying that it was an absolute scream to hustle along.

The Supersport inherited the S’s Crossflow motor, wide-ratio BC gearbox and stiffer suspension, but it looked much more purposeful thanks to Ford raiding its specialised Series X catalogue and equipping it with polyurethane spoilers and wheelarch extensions.
