IF you think about it, every building is a mausoleum to the flora and fauna that lived there before. The constructions of agriculture are no exception. Our hay barn, a 1970s, open-fronted affair of steel and concrete, was erected on the intersection of a thorny hedge and a boggy dip; in a sort of species-cleansing, the song thrushes, the cuckoo flower and the frogs were removed for the barn’s making.
