THE LAST weekend of June should be an absolute cracker. Not only are there three games of weighty significance but, barring a late comeback from the pandemic, there will be fans present in decent numbers. We know already since fans returned that even 5,000 can make the noise of 20,000 in the sheer exultations of relief at being back at the altars of the sport.

On Saturday 26 June, the British & Irish Lions come out for the first time for four years to play Japan at BT Murrayfield. On the same day, the two combatants in the Gallagher Premiership final – the favourites to reach that are Exeter Chiefs and Bristol Bears, although with plenty of chance of upsets in the semi-finals. And then on the Sunday, England A play Scotland A at Welford Road.

And do you know what? I would put that A game right up there in significance. The A games have been the missing
