WHERE was Jack Watkins when, to slightly adjust George Bernard Shaw’s pithy summation, ‘I was wasting gallons of ink on innumerable volumes of nonsense about the meaning of ()? Fifty years ago, I studied for A-level, two years on the trot (please don’t ask why two years). If only I’d had this masterly summary as my primary reference. Seldom
