Your cover is the first thing a reader will notice about your book. Get it right and it can generate interest that leads to sales. Get it wrong and a potential supporter will be put off – possibly forever.
Whether you decide to make your own cover, purchase a pre-made or hire a designer, there are a few jobs to do first.
Information gathering
Start by going online and look at the covers that are most like the books you write. Don’t ask how you can stand out and be different from them – that is not the purpose of the exercise. Emulation is the key to success. When your book is complete, it needs to sit alongside its peers on that bookshelf and fit in.
