Are birders the best game Shots?

Are the best Shots twitchers?” asked a good friend while we were having a serious chat about shooting. Having given the matter some thought, whether or not it is true on a technical level, it most certainly is true when applied to the enjoyment of every day spent out with a gun.

Never will I forget an early morning outing in north Norfolk on a coastal heath, when a nightingale was so beautifully singing in scrub adjacent to the lane. A shaft of sunlight penetrated deep into the darkness of that thicket and lit up the bird within touching distance.

With its inclined open beak and inner pink throat, a clear, unique flow of notes made magical music.
