Accordion Lessons with Nico

Three years ago, I had a strong impulse to learn the piano accordion. It was an instrument I heard occasionally growing up – at my grandparent’s house when they’d entertain guests, or at the local Italian festivals. It was the sound of celebration and a connection to this place “Italy” that I knew was a part of me, but I couldn’t comprehend how living in rural southwest Australia. In my twenties, I visited Italy for the first time, and went from one relative’s house to the next for lunch and dinner. Almost always, the accordion would make an appearance around the table. I didn’t know much Italian, and so the music became our shared language – I’d nod vigorously at songs I knew, gushed at sounds I loved, and in those moment this foreign family felt like family I’d known all my life.
