Keeping faith

BRUNO AND Brutus are part of the family, two French bulldogs whose pictures might well adorn Zander Fagerson’s bedside locker in South Africa, along with those of his wife and two young kids. When you talk to the big prop you get a very clear sense that family is what it’s all about for him. Family and faith. Christianity is part of who he is and is part of why he is where he is.

“I’m a Christian, yeah,” he says. “It gives me a decent grounding in life. I’m Zander – husband, father, son, brother, friend and after that I’m a rugby player. I’m a follower of Jesus. Don’t get me wrong, I love rugby, it’s my job and I’m grateful for everything it has given me. But I struggled with it for a while. For a time it ate me up and my family and faith was the anchor I needed.”
