ALMOST a year ago (), I wrote of my admiration for Charles Napier Hemy (1841–1917) as a painter of water. His grandfather was a German military bandsman called Hemming who had come to Britain in 1797 to join volunteer and militia units commanded by the Duke of Buccleuch. He married a Miss Napier and settled in Newcastle, where their son, Henri Friedrich, has been attributed to him.
