There’s no reason to write-off the dream of owning a 911 – especially if it’s the bruisingly quick yet surprisingly easy to live with 997. Indeed, it’s the bestselling 911 to date so there’s plenty to choose from and with prices starting at a smidge under £20,000 for an early one, it’s now easily within reach of buyers that might have otherwise considered a Golf GTI or RS Audi.

Launched in 2004, there were two models available initially – the 3.6-litre Carrera and the 3.8-litre Carrera S, the latter having 19in alloys and an extra 60bhp on tap. As you would expect, both were scintillatingly quick and rewarding to drive. A full Cabriolet came along in April 2005 followed by the four-wheel drive Carrera 4 and 4S for the 2006 Model Year.
