Bluebird spreads her wings

JESS HEWITT and Hot Bluebird have had a run of almost unbroken winning form since rekindling their partnership two months ago – and they spread their wings even further when they blitzed the winter B&C championship by two-and-a-half seconds.

Their intrepid gallop to the final oxer wouldn’t have been out of place at Cheltenham, but this game little mare didn’t even hint at touching a fence.

“The jump-off suited my horse as you can gallop her and turn her and it had a bit of everything,” Jess, 22, said.

“I knew on the run to the last I could trust her to go on a really open stride and still be careful. I just landed and galloped. I saw the distance and thought, ‘I’m not actually sure if it’s there,’ but I started kicking and once I started, that was it. That was where I made up my time.”

Nine combinations reached the second phase
