“I really respect how Riz Ahmed stands up for what he believes,” says journalist Mike Christensen, who interviewed the Oscar- nominated actor about his role in standout 2020 film Sound of Metal. “Something that he said in our interview has really stuck with me: ‘the most powerful thing you can do in the bigger fight for representation is to defiantly present who you are’.”

“I did quite a few phone interviews with up-and-coming actors in 2020 and they were all memorable in their own ways,” Singapore’s style director was certain to be one of the biggest Asian—led movies of the year, but the idea of being part of a project that’s a retelling of a beloved classic—an animated Disney one at that—continues to intrigue me. There’s such immense pressure in being able to live up to the original and I wanted to find out how and why a relatively new actor would even put himself through it.
