ltrarunners are motivated athletes. We meticulously track miles, time, intensity, amount of vertical gain, calories consumed on the run and a host of other variables that we find meaningful to performance. Most of these can easily be monitored by watches and our favorite training apps like Strava or TrainingPeaks. Indeed, all of these variables are related to some physiological phenomenon we are trying to improve. Time, intensity and amount of vertical can be manipulated to improve physiological phenomena such as increases in mitochondria, capillary density and V02 max.
