• On 8 November 1965, Britain bought the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius for $4 million. This remote group of 65 tropical islands – situated 3,500 kilometres east of Kenya and some 1,600 kilometres southwest of India – became a new British colony, to be known as the British Indian Ocean
