aunched in 1936 and taking its name from its status as the firm’s first four-wheeled, four-cylinder car, the Morgan 4-4 (later 4/4) was launched in 1936, production resuming postwar with the 1267cc Standard engine, but when Standard enlarged the unit to 2088cc, it was felt too large for the model, justifying the creation of a new model: the Plus 4, powered by the newly enlarged Standard motor. Such was its popularity that after a year Morgan discontinued the 4/4 and focused upon Plus 4 production, only reintroducing the smaller model in 1955 when it was felt that an entry level offering would boost Morgan sales further. This new 4/4 would be based upon a chassis derived from that of the Plus 4 model, but fitted with the 1172cc Ford sidevalve engine. In 1960 this was replaced by the Anglia 105E engine, then from 1961 the 1.5-litre Ford engine from the 109E Consul, itself replaced by the 116E Cortina engine from 1963. In 1969 it
